Baba Low, Jalan Kurau

I told Jackson, you will not believe that such an area exists in Bangsar. Indeed, this hidden enclave, is not known to many a Bangsarwan. Located in the area where all the road names are named after fish, (Kaloi, Bilis, Kurau, Tenggiri.....) there is a small row of shophouses that host an interesting menagerie of eats.

I've actually heard of this place ages ago, and have been meaning to try it out, so this was a perfect opportunity. Lo and behold, who should we bump into eating there, alone? The Goddess of the Food Bloggers herself, Ms Boolicious of Masak Masak. Serendipitious, coz Boo and Jackson WERE the FIRST two food bloggers I ever met up with. What a life changing experience.

Anyway, Boo was already tucking into her Nyonya Laksa, which I knew immediately was what I was going to have. It's like love at first sight.

We kinda forced Jackson to order something else, for variety sake. He ordered the Nasi Nyonya, which is white rice, served with chicken and various condiments. I had a spoonful of the rice, which was tasty, and actually, tasted rather healthy too.

Of course, it is always an honor and pleasure to be seated at the same table as the most recognisable food blogger in Malaysia.

I also ordered the nyonya laksa, except I opted for yellow mee instead of meehoon. I am an ardent yellow mee fan, in all shapes and sizes. Fat, thin, flat, medium....

The nyonya laksa has a lovely flavour, not overly tangy, I think no santan, but yet thick, and the kaffir lime leaves add to a lovely fragrance. Most importantly, they have see hum. A very adequate serving for RM4.50 (or was it RM5)....

The pie tee, RM4.50 for 6, is also delicious. The hats are crispy and light, and the filling substantial. And its topped with fried egg. Perfect. Lovely deep fried shallots are sprinkled as the crowning glory.

Egg skin popiah. Usually, I don't like egg skinned popiah skin for peking duck. But this particular egg skin is fabulous. Very yummy indeed. The popiah is great, it holds its shape elegantly, without you having to resort to contorting your mouth to make sure you catch it before it all collapses into one messy heap.

The otak otak was nice, but not my favourite item there. Lots of fish in the otak though. Afterall, fish is brain food, and otak means brain.

And finally the chendol. Them green bits of chendol taste homemade, and is very good. For some reason, mine had the red kidney beans in it, EUGHHH....but Boo's didn't.

Basically, prices are kopitiam prices, including the drinks. Total bill came up to RM32 for the 3 of us. Pretty good value, and because its away from the madding crowd, parking is easier too.

Can't wait to go again. Who wanna come with me? I also want to check out the Thai place and the noodle place along the same row.....

House & Co, Bangsar Shopping Centre

Looking from the outside of the shop you wouldn't really know, unless you had inside information, that within its confines, the furniture and household shop called House & Co in Bangsar Shopping Centre houses a little cafe. I had recently heard about it, when friends raved about the curry laksa and the nasi lemak. It was with a bit of trepidation that I managed to convince my usual Friday Boys Lunch crowd to make their way there, instead of the usual Bangsar Village outlet we hang out at.

I quickly put in a disclaimer that I had never been and I bear no responsibility for the outcome. However, my fears quickly disappeared, when I saw that the cafe was full of people, always a good indication of the quality of the food.

The menu is rather limited, which goes to show, you can draw crowds by having just a few consistent good items. So, we zoomed into the popular dishes, and had the nasi lemak, nyonya curry laksa, and ipoh hor fun.

The nasi lemak is served on a HUGE platter and the condiments are served on pretty banana flowers. I didnt get to try it, but the rice looked nice and fluffy, just the way I like it. Apparently the rendang was good and tender, and friend remarked that it was all good stuff, at least it wasn't just presentation.

KO3 who was suffering a bad tummy opted for the clear soup hor fun, which was ordinary.

The Nyonya laks came in a HUGE bowl as well, and looked absolutely divine. Actually, it was rather good. The soup was thick enough, without overkill of coconut milk, the ingredients were good, nice slices pak cham kai (steamed chicken), cockles, (very important), two big prawns....

Each of these cost RM15 each, which is no worse than say Alexis, or other eateries in this category. Considering the portions and quality, I'd say it was good value.

Highly recommended. They did have an assortment of desserts, but we were too stuffed with our mains.
