Pear And Ginger Upside Down Pudding

Since I've been told that my posts (by some youth of today) are too lengthy and tiresome to wade through, I shall keep this one short.

I've always ordered this dessert whenever I dined at Top Hats, Bonton & Alexis. I suspect the pastries Top Hats, Bonton, Alexis were all spawned by the one and the same person. Su Chan. And for years, I have been combing the net for a recipe that resembled this, but to no real avail. Until she came out with a cookbook.

Of course when Boolicious (Masak Masak) told me about the impending launch of the book, I was as excited as when the Lord of the Rings was released..... well....maybe not, bring it down a few notches, yeah, say 90%, and you have it.

Even more thrilled was I to find out that within those pages lie the magical inscriptions that would allow me to make THIS in my own oven.

Verdict? Absolutely yummy. Since I couldn't be bothered to make my own treacle ice cream, I just served it with Bulla Pure Cream, which is probably a better choice, as the cake is sufficiently sweet and the neutral but orgasmic taste of cream actually complements it the way lemongrass complements tom yam.

On a separate note, strawberries can really embellish a cake with minimal effort hor. I think this looks quite pretty. Only problem is the prohibitive cost of strawberries.

Well, this youth of "yesterday" prefers the long and winding road, er, post. Bring them back, please! says I. For it is not so much wading into the lengths and depths of it, as much as slowly savouring each carefully selected word, witty or worrisome, pedantic or (possibly) pornographic. Brevity has its place, but surely not on a blog destined for decadence, dining-wise anyway?

In final analysis: Size does matter? (Well, it does when it's this goooood...) Panjang lah sikit! :D

those youths have probably not reached puberty or grown enough moss to enjoy such well-endowed whimsicals. *covering face with Su Chan's book*

it's amazing how you can create such wonderful cakes by just referring to books while others (no pun intended) tend to stumble even before the flour sieving step. i've got so much to learn.

oh, btw, i just bought myself one of those batter mixing machines and plan to bake something. any simply recipe from your blog that i can refer to ar? (very difficult to search your blog leh)

fatboybakes said...

awww, you two are so sweet to be so encouraging. kinda earned yourselves a permanent spot in the dinner guest list....

nickhkl, what the heck is a batter mixing machine? you mean a cake mixer? try the orange mocha brownie. its pretty fail proof and tastes delicious with ice cream.

I think lianne hit the nail on the spot..."size always matters, hence the bigger the better?"

The cake looks delish - must go dig out the recipe book and give it a try!

Which 'youth' of today told you that your post are lengthy??

Wanna ask you, is the SuChan recipe book recommended for beginner like me ar???

HairyBerry said...

oh, so that's what u call that 3-speed, rotating mechanism lar...a cake mixer...shows how bakeologically declined i am...

thanks! will try it out...actually, i thought yr carrot cake would be easier to make, but since the purpose is to try out ma mean machine, i'll stick to your suggestion lar...baking disaster, here i cum!

fatboybakes said...

pea, err, i dunno la, but boo reckons its not really for beginners coz got a lot of assumptions. the youth of today that said post too lengthy not a food blogger.

min, ya, its one of the better local cookbooks. didnt find any glaring grammar mistakes either.

msiagirl, we can always arrange for a different pear pudding to call out your name when you're here.

spot, ME TOO, banoffee from su chan...and sicilian cheesecake, and tiramisu cake, and ...pear and ginger upside down pudding. (actually, no, i discovered that in alexis).

boo, is kylie going to teach us malaysian chinese how to fry eggs, and sprinkle shallots and coriander? oh, and caramelise? cant stand her on tv, but i'm sure she's a charmer in real life.

ai wei, thanks.... alas, it was for someone else, so i didnt get to try it.

FBB, pls bring back yr cheong hei post, there is no other who blogs uniquely like you! gimme back long post!

actually when the reviewer of i forgot which paper of this su chan book, revealed dat she din include certain recipe to make her recipe complete. when she asked then suchan gave it to her. made me hold on to my horse to get this book la. you think the book is worth it?

What A Lulu said...

i was so inspired by precious pea's roasting ventures, i actually bought the delicacies of china town recipe book, and after reading fbb's entry, was going to buy suchan's book. now having second thoughts after babe's comment.

babe,
did she omit ingredients or steps?

Dee said...

suchan rocks!
i bought the same book, but so far i've just been drooling. looks like i need to get my arse into the kitchen.

btw, the curve flea market sells 3 punnets of strawberries for RM11.

FBB: Hahaha, no choice di lah... your audience have spoken! We want the Panjang Posts! (Wouldn't go as far as calling it "cheong hei" though, "ngo keng bei yen da"...)

Lianne: You're moving to Germany? Take me with you! Please? :P

Nic (KHKL): I'd be very willing to be your official taste tester, first batch of your cookies especially... ;)

Young Lemongrass: "Young"? LL got younger sista, is it? How come we dontch know one, FBB? This must be the one married to the NBYE (Not Bald Yet Eagle). Lol.

fatboybakes said...

Kennymah, you and the audience are far too kind. snigger, exactly, i didnt know there were still young lemongrass stalks, i thought they were all old and dried like tobacco for wrapping.

dee, yup, move that bloomin arse. hee hee. its one of the few cookbooks where i want to try more than 70% of the stuff. even my buxom domestic goddess reaches 10% at the most.

whatalulu, I OSO BOUGHT that chinatown book. sum more had to us the law of attraction to get it... coz i couldnt find it the first time i looked. su chan's book is actually suitable for me, coz it doesnt waste time on unnecessary preamble. unlike catherine lau's cheesecake seduction which has the same three step in almost every recipe.

babe_kl, su chan gave the recipes to her or gave her a piece of her mind? hahaha! ditto my reply to lulu.

imbitchy, oh no, losing yet another of our beauty and brains to the foreigners. yes yes, must organise something in your honor.

fatboybakes said...

nickhkl, i think carrot cake doesnt really need a cake mixer leh...

Anonymous said...

Looks like everyone has spoken. Your blog, very entertaining lah. Don't change. Those cakes looks so delicious...

LianneK said...

FBB .. no lah, don't purposely organise for me lah .. me damn pai seh and can get quite emo one you know .. afterwards, damn kam kai lah. just go somewhere makan, and me wanna share the bottles i have with you guys coz me not gonna bring over lah lol

Me - beauty + brain?? ahem .. *blush*

Kenny - me punya suitcase errrr, no space worrrr. on serious note, you are most welcome to visit if you don't mind "laid back" town lol Me no charge one :-)

snowdrop said...

gosh I can't stand kylie but youknowhat, i DID learn how to fry eggs from her! as in, learnt the secret to fluffy restaurant style eggs... use 5x the amount of oil i've been using all this while!

maybe she'll come to teach the chinese people about chinese food (having never heard of dialects and regional specialities)... and then proceed to eat bao with chopsticks... :)

msiagirl said...

I would be singularly honoured to eat any pudding you make, however I know your schedule super busy next next week!

Kenny-ar: Be respectful your aunty-ah...she still more dewey eyed than fbb mah.

Oh no! Tarik the kek already.
(aiyah too many boys ganging up must support sister.)

fatboybakes said...

msiagirl, i shall attempt to make something to attach to the wife when she goes and do her girly bonding thing.

snowie, i thought you also need a superhot wok to do that...you got ah? those with the three concentric ring burners, or four,...she's the classicest example of NGAK GWAI LOW...

lianne, you mean you're exiled to some provincial town in germany? where? munich? dusseldorf? bremen?

myfoodsafari, u too kind. thanks. have linked ya.

Anonymous said...

FBB: Haiyo, Munich where got provincial? It's a damn happening city, man... Here's where we have the Oktoberfest every year... Good German beer and drunk American tourists being silly and loud... what more can anyone ask for? :P
Lianne: Oh I don't mind "laid back" town at all... I probably need some peace and quiet after years of running around in KL. On a less serious note, I buy you another suitcase lor... You can cram me inside one. Just push... harder...

Msiagirl: My "aunty"? Ho ho ho... I think you're in more trouble with your sista than I am lah. Sounds like you agree with FBB and me on the dry, flaky texture of leftover lemongrass... :P

FBB, again: How they do their "girly bonding thing" anyway? Got use rope and handcuffs one ar? Does this mean the whole "Saint Lemongrass" is more kinky role-playing than actual Pope-ular endorsement?

HairyBerry said...

fbb, noted! will stick to my brownie. i'm reading the recipe like memorising my spm form 5 biology bab 1 liddat d. oh, it's seks dan pembiakan.

kenny, u really want to be my food tester ar?? just to let u know, i've not baked anything before in my life. unless we are speaking in a metaphorical sense lar. hehe...

Anonymous said...

eh.... those youths of today that u mentioned dont know how to appreciate the way you blog. I'm just 18 =P but I really really love to read your blog(every sentence of it!), I find it quite funny ^^ bring the cheong hei back!

Erm, to Kylie Kwong fans, if u are a Astro Viewer, u can enter the contest to see her in person, www.astro.com.my , contests ends on june 28. by the way, when the word 'Kylie' was first mentioned, I thought it was Kylie Minogue, I kinda screamed a little. lol.

fatboybakes said...

lin, wow, you're 18. young enough to be my daughter. surely kylie minogue is not your time.

nickhkl, the brownie recipe is pretty fail proof. we await with eager anticipation.

kennymah, really meh? my BIL was in munich for a couple of years. apparently one day oridi can cover the whole thing.

i have no idea what they do in female bonding.

msiagirl said...

FBB: Haiyo: too bad you not coming along. We show you ;) umm some "bonding".

Kenny ah: I have so many young cousins your age call me "aunty" cos I young aunty mah - but I guess no young man would dream of calling me that here if I wasn't related to them!! Haha, my mistake - we your fairy blogsisters, Watch OUT! We'll make you eat your words, and not in Tom Yum either.

LianneK said...

FBB & Kenny - how i wish its munich lah, been there and loved it. my bf place in ahaus, at the border of netherlands, about 2 hours drive from amsterdam or dusseldorf (somewhere in the middle lah). if you enjoy canggih windmill, there's LOTS!

Kenny - Push Harder??? Errr .. I don't understand this line leh, coz me no need to use it at all ;-p

Anonymous said...

Nic (KHKL): Very the sure I will taste your baking lah. But, uhm, you're not using any Gula Melaka are you?

FBB: Your BIL may not have encountered its seedier underbelly... Oh the tales I could tell you of Munich... I could write an entire book on it. Say, "Munching Munich: Beware Who You Bite." :P

Liane: But it's near Amsterdam wor... that alone is enticement enough. Magic mushrooms anyone? We could try a couple of phantasgormic recipes... ;)

fatboybakes said...

kennymah, hmmm, prob bil didnt want to tell all...knowing him, i'm sure he found the underbelly.

lianne, oooh, i love windmills. it reminds me of my childhood...and hans. Hans was the little boy who saved the dyke...(lest anyone started getting dirty thoughts)

msiagirl, yalar, i wouldnt know what to do when the whole troop gets up simultaneously to go powder their nose.

Can i get the Su Chan book in Popular or MPH?

snowdrop said...

FBB, i do mine with a good'ol old-fashioned cast iron wok, on a good'ol old-fashioned gas burner/stove, in my good'ol old-fashioned "wet kitchen" just outside my apartment's "dry" kitchen... works like a charm :B

fatboybakes said...

ah, snowie, hope we get to try your fluffy eggs soon.

michelle, dunno about popurar, but MPH got la for sure. TIMES didnt seem to have.

GFAD said...

Wahh... really happening, your hacienda. 40 over comments... And in your shortest post summore.. :D

The pudding is sticky and moist? Since you rave so much about it, am tempted to try it out.

fatboybakes said...

kat, alas, porn sells. yup, the pudding is sticky and moist. it contains treacle. i've been tweaking the recipe to now almost halving the sugar from the original.

Diary of Kay El said...

hi there. this is a bit late but better late than never. delicious pudding! with the reduced sugar, it made us less guilty to finish off the whole thing between 2 of us. And the pure cream as you have recommended is the excellent choice of topping. but I wonder sugar or cream is the lesser of the 2 evils.... hmmm... oh well...
