Baba Low, Jalan Kurau

I told Jackson, you will not believe that such an area exists in Bangsar. Indeed, this hidden enclave, is not known to many a Bangsarwan. Located in the area where all the road names are named after fish, (Kaloi, Bilis, Kurau, Tenggiri.....) there is a small row of shophouses that host an interesting menagerie of eats.

I've actually heard of this place ages ago, and have been meaning to try it out, so this was a perfect opportunity. Lo and behold, who should we bump into eating there, alone? The Goddess of the Food Bloggers herself, Ms Boolicious of Masak Masak. Serendipitious, coz Boo and Jackson WERE the FIRST two food bloggers I ever met up with. What a life changing experience.

Anyway, Boo was already tucking into her Nyonya Laksa, which I knew immediately was what I was going to have. It's like love at first sight.

We kinda forced Jackson to order something else, for variety sake. He ordered the Nasi Nyonya, which is white rice, served with chicken and various condiments. I had a spoonful of the rice, which was tasty, and actually, tasted rather healthy too.

Of course, it is always an honor and pleasure to be seated at the same table as the most recognisable food blogger in Malaysia.

I also ordered the nyonya laksa, except I opted for yellow mee instead of meehoon. I am an ardent yellow mee fan, in all shapes and sizes. Fat, thin, flat, medium....

The nyonya laksa has a lovely flavour, not overly tangy, I think no santan, but yet thick, and the kaffir lime leaves add to a lovely fragrance. Most importantly, they have see hum. A very adequate serving for RM4.50 (or was it RM5)....

The pie tee, RM4.50 for 6, is also delicious. The hats are crispy and light, and the filling substantial. And its topped with fried egg. Perfect. Lovely deep fried shallots are sprinkled as the crowning glory.

Egg skin popiah. Usually, I don't like egg skinned popiah skin for peking duck. But this particular egg skin is fabulous. Very yummy indeed. The popiah is great, it holds its shape elegantly, without you having to resort to contorting your mouth to make sure you catch it before it all collapses into one messy heap.

The otak otak was nice, but not my favourite item there. Lots of fish in the otak though. Afterall, fish is brain food, and otak means brain.

And finally the chendol. Them green bits of chendol taste homemade, and is very good. For some reason, mine had the red kidney beans in it, EUGHHH....but Boo's didn't.

Basically, prices are kopitiam prices, including the drinks. Total bill came up to RM32 for the 3 of us. Pretty good value, and because its away from the madding crowd, parking is easier too.

Can't wait to go again. Who wanna come with me? I also want to check out the Thai place and the noodle place along the same row.....

Is parking a problem at lunchtime during the week? Gotta try it one day. Just a short drive from office somemore. Better than battling the main Bangsar crawl.

me thinks your shots are getting more and more artistic la. the spooning of the bee hoon, the 3D arrangement of bowls, the caterpillar popiah with that one lime pip from the laksa, i suppose...nice!

i wanna do this kurau also!!! but weekends lar..sigh...oh, maybe can do a bloggers gathering there also hor?

guffaw, hairy, nonsense la, the spooning of the meehoon was quite accidental. boolicious was already halfway thru her meal when we bumped into her, and i insisted on taking a pic coz mine was gonna be yellow mee.

and the lime pip........hhahaha, gee, escaped me completely.

They have pretty decent mee siam and the lunch sets are quite reasonable.

If I'm not mistaken, they close on Sundays and open till 3pm on Saturdays. The owner told me he goes back to Malacca after he closes his shop.

Very nice, and inexpensive, too. Wish I knew of it while I was in KL - some more staying two stones' throws away. (In comparison, Liane mentioned some assam laksa at a market stall in PJ was RM6 a bowl pulak!)

(haha, that's not a pick up line)

seriously where is this ar?..quiet and peaceful..lots of parking..wat else can u ask for?

okay, chewdren, listen carefully to uncle's instructions.
turn into jln maarof from jln bangsar, pass the indian temple on your left, and take a first left, (I think there's a furniture showroom at that corner), which is JALAN TANDOK. if that doesn't make you horny, ....

go straight down jln tandok, and remain so. at the cross roads, which lead to jln riong, do not be tempted to veer off. pass bangsar heights condo, then road veers right, which miraculously goes from tandok, to kurau. the shops are at your right.

After this post of yours, the place will be the next Telawi.... ;o)

fatboybakes said...

dear DoKL, well, considering its one measly row of very old shophouses, facing residential link houses, hahaha, i doubt its gonna be the next telawi. sigh, telawi has suddenly become massage parlor street...

LFB, aiyo, i've eaten there twice oridi this week...

i went there for lunch today. big disappointment! lonnnggg wait, almost 40 mins. and it got served instalment plan style. nasi lemak mediocre, nyonya rice out of stock, otak was lumpy. but pie tee and nyonya laksa was good. but chicken wings dried out! but the cendol was a horror! the green stuff was hard and chewy mostly, but some soft. obviously not fresh!
not worth all the trouble going there!

oh dear, jessica, sorry to hear of your bad experience. sigh, therein lies the shortcoming of a lot of our msian f&b outlets. consistency! pity hor.
