We're no strangers to Pantai Seafood, in Sg Ara, but despite the fact that I've eaten more salt than a lot of young bloggers have eaten rice, I've never before sampled the Alaskan King Crab. At RM248 per kilo, this mother here, weighing 2.3kg, was a whopping RM570!!! Not something you get to eat everyday.
Anyway, since there was an occasion yesterday, (and it wasn't only just Father's Day), I am finally an alaskan king crab virgin no more.
So what is the big deal, you ask? Well, for starters, all those legs are filled with luscious, chewy crab meat. It is a bit like a cross between a lobster and our mudcrab actually, incorporating the best of both worlds. The meat is wonderfully succulent, and it's easy to deshell. And the superior stock in which it is cooked was absolutely delectable.
Another first for me, at Pantai, was this fried glass noodle. (tong fun). Well, it warrants a picture coz it was something we havent ordered before here at Pantai.
On the baking front, I have been experimenting with cheesecakes. Below is a pic of a baked blueberry cheesecake. Have also been dabbling with chilled durian cheesecake, but haven't managed to take a decent pic.

Mmmm that crab looks delicious. I haven't tasted Alaskan crab, only seen it on National Geographic. Close to snow crab? My crab can beat up your crab :-) :

Am still a virgin. So you reckon you got your money's worth for the Alaskan Crab?
I think the closest I came to an Alaskan crab was their claws which I ate overseas once long ago. The cheesecake looks yummy as usual and chilled durian cheesecake sounds wicked.
haha at RM570..im gonna stay virgin for a very long time..poor me..wahaha
are you going to have another gathering soon? maybe alaskan crabs are on the menu? wahahaha
I only had the claws in the States, many moons ago! Happy Belated Father's Day! Eh...you need any taste testers for your new range of cakes? :o)
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yummz...i can imagine how good it is. I once ordered their Spider Crab and it was cooked with the same stock. Wahh..super sedap, not a drop left.
Err...I wonder how the cake tastes like? Hint hint.
The crab looks seriously good. The best crab I've tasted so far is the snow crab, which cost RM400+. No fight with this alaskan crab you reckon?
paps and tankiasu, i think the hokkaido crab is of the same family, since they all hangout in the same oceans. but snow crabs are from oz i think and i havent tasted it to compare. but alaskan looks meatier.
lyrical, considering the crab fed 6 adults adequately, i'd say the RM570 was okay larrrr.... no worse than eating say at cilantro or lafite. in fact, for RM80 at lafite, i heard all you get is two scallops.
boo, at least you've tried la. actually, (answering precious pea at the same time) i have no idea how the blueberry cheesecake tastes like. one of my clients once said i very the brave, simply sell things i havent tasted. chilled durian cheesecake, well, i reckon that's quite idiot proof...cream cheese, yummy, durian, yummy, it'll be a feat to screw that up.
joe, you're 22, i'm 40. you have 18 years to devirginise, and judging by your food blog, you'll probably do it before 25.
wmw...dont want to poison the tasters la.
virgins(give us da shivers) and Very Xpensive crabs dun sound so matching but anyway that must be some feast !
( whatever happened to Fiji crabs ? )
tbsg, hahaha, yup it was a feast alright.
i was wondering myself, whatever happened to sri lankan crabs? remember those huge mothers, that were rumoured to feed on human corpses?
you are finally back and wow, with alaskan crabs!!!! boo hoo... sad case, me never get to try it.... am just not lucky enough :( anyways, happy father's day to you yeah ;)
The Alaskan King Crab looks like a really huge orange tank. Makes the malaysian dark shell crab looks like an army jeep.
the alaskan crabs look delicious ! so what was the other "occassion" besides Father's Day ?? :-)
Look at what I've missed! early this year, Phitoy had this at Mei Keng Fatt Seafood Restaurant! It was kinda business meal so I shy to join. Can I quote you? Cis bedebah. Should had grown thicker skin overnite & squeezed in a seat!
2.3Kg... as big as the smallest laptop?? Wah, with the price tag, I'm sure I'll stick with Joe lar... >_<" Happy Belated Father's Day to you
well i hope that wish comes true la..if not i m gonna hunt u dwn when im 25..bear in mind i know where u stay ahhaha
do u need any 'kai lui' (god-daughter)? hahaha..if yes..will u brign ur kai lui for king crab?
The crab certainly looks 'oh la la'.
2.3kg crab! It's a monster!! Let us know how your durian cheesecake turned out! yum!
Holy expensive crab, but actually it's very cheap in RM...here it's going to cost me over US$300...but I must say it's quite good lah.
To tankiasu and all,
King crab is certainly superior to snow crab in both flavor and texture. It is also quite a bit larger than snow crab. The king crab has a somewhat thorny shell (think durian-like crustacean) while the snow crab shell is thinner and much smoother.
As mentioned by fatboybakes, the texture of king crab falls between a lobster and dungeness crab (in the U.S.) or the mud crab (in S.E. Asia). Here in the U.S., the king crab sells for US$35 per kilo or higher for the jumbo while the snow crab sells for about one-third that price. The dungeness crab is actually more like a large mud crab in size and texture. Sweeter and not as chewy as the king crab. Nevertheless, the king crab is really a worthy meal.
