Rice Cafe, A Hidden Gem

Tucked away in that little row of shophouses on Lorong Maarof, a new little cafe has opened next to the laundrette. (Same row as HSBC ....someone huffed and said, WHERE got HSBC in Bangsar.... duhhh, HOT AND SPICY BEST CURRY LA)

Rice Cafe. Simple, straight to the point. Rice, the staple diet of every good Asian person. Before carbs became evil, that is. This simple, elegant cafe is the perfect lunchtime ...and breakfast spot, actually. The fragrance of Aromatic Aik Cheong coffee wafts through the premises.

For breakfast, good old nasi lemak, with all my favourite ingredients. Fried egg, (requested with runny yolk), lovely fried chicken, delicious sambal.... my only grouse was the rice that wasn't fluffy enough. I love fluffy rice. Though there are a great number out there who prefer softer wetter rice.

Half boiled eggs done to perfection. Ah, looking at them makes me want some now. If it weren't for the implications of clogged arteries, I could eat eggs everyday. I LOVE half boiled eggs.

The wife ordered the Singapore Fried Meehoon. I am not usually a meehoon fan, but this was yummy. Piping hot, and very flavoursome. The right hint of sweetness and saltiness.

Nasi dagang even! I loved the texture of THIS rice. Fluffy, and almost al dente. Pity I was already stuffed on nasi lemak, so could only try a spoonful or so of the nasi dagang.

Yummy fish curry. I think it was a mackerel of sorts, if not tenggiri. But it wasn't tongkol.

Oh, I have to say, their signature dish is their Assam Laksa, but as of press time, I have no photograph of it. Quite honestly, I reckon its one of the best Assam Laksas I've had in a long long time. Of course, the hot mama who runs the place....makes it even hotter. Or two hot mamas, should I say. They also have set lunches daily, and are opened from breakfast to dinner time.

I shall be taking pics of the Assam Laksa pretty soon.

nasi dagang??? I'm so there... normally I would only eat nasi dagang at Park Village in Uptown coz I couldn't find any place that serves better... apart from what I could get in Kuantan.
But if they are not using ikan tongkol, that beats the purpose of nasi dagang.
Is this place normally crowded in the morning??? Is it stuffy? If yes, my baby can't go!

Hi I have been to Rice Cafe. The fish that they use is actually tongkol...small sized tuna. Yummy!
I had three helpings...breakfast, lunch and early dinner. Was starving for nasi dagang. Thanks Cheng for the info.

I dont know how is your daily diet but if you do not eat cholesterol laden food all the time, you can have half-boiled eggs at least 3 times a week. Of course you'll have to cut back on the yummy nasi lemak and nasi dagang....curries and stuff. The eggs sure look good

I've always been a fan of Nasi Dagang but just cannot seem to find the place that cooks it correct. Most places, they look really good but after taking a bite, you know it is just city-style. I frequent Bangsar often and will try this place out. Thanks.

It's been too long since I've had some decent nasi dagang. Have you tried the one at Village Park, Damansara Uptown. Pretty good but you have to get there early for it cos they are usually sold out of it by 11am or earlier most days. :P

david jr, hope this one will meet your expectations. i thought it was good.

world windows, indeed. half boiled eggs and toast. bliss.

domestic diva, would that be 2 eggs 3 times a week? or just 1 egg? i guess i COULD do the right thing and eat only one yolk but breaks my heart to know some baby chick gave up their yolk in vain. it's no yolk i tell ya.

anonymous, glad the info was useful.

I am in US!!! Where I live, it's impossible to get pandan leaves. I tried making my own version of nasi lemak, alas, was disastrous! I miss my homeland, Malaysia :)

Thanx FBB again! Was at Rice again today...had a double portion of dagang and their latest addition, some fried chicken kalamas or something (whole leg) which is truly yummy. One thing for sure, I am going to look like nasi dagang soon. Btw, my friends had their belachan fried rice and nasi lemak.
Keep up the good job of updating us....
