Buttermilk Pancakes From Home Made Buttermilk

Children, we have already learnt what to do with your Overbeaten Cream in a previous post.

Now, for part II in the series, we learn WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR BUTTERMILK from your overbeaten cream. I've come across many recipes for pancakes that call for buttermilk, and yes, there have been many "substitutes" for buttermilk, such as milk & lemon, milk & yoghurt,...if you were to BUY buttermilk, it costs an arm, leg and probably an udder... such beautiful mammaries.

The buttermilk is the whitish stuff, resembling milk, that has separated from the cream, which has curdled on its way to becoming butter, and I guess, hence the term buttermilk. If cream de la creme refers to the top students in the class, I guess the buttermilk would be the bottom of the barrel. (like me). But who cares, since buttermilk is even more expensive than butter.

So, to make the buttermilk pancakes, you need:

3 cups of plain flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 eggs (or use 1 chicken egg and 2 quails eggs)
1 cup milk
1 cup buttermilk
3 tablespoons sugar
dash of vanilla
100gm melted butter

Basically, mix everything together..... let the batter rest for 30 minutes or so....or 2 hours until your guests arrive 1 hour late...

Warm a non stick griddle over medium heat, (the first couple of pancakes are usually disastrous), and scoop up dollops of 1/3rd cups of batter onto the griddle. When some bubbly holes appear, you can flip them.

Ta dah, fluffy buttermilk pancakes...served with homemade butter and honey. (no, despite having a bee at home, I dont get no homemade honey)....

If you can afford it, use maple syrup.

Incidentally, I was kidding about the quail's egg.

Where can i buy cakes made with butter-milk?
I only tried it layered with buttermilk on Red Velvet.
Those cakes baked by chinese (old school) bakery (there is one at Sg Besi/Pudu) are sinfully rich and colourful plus very creamy but i was told they are of low grade as they are made with majerine. Is that true?
I could eat half of the cake

It's been a while since I've had an indulgent homemade Msian brunch. *hint hint*

Not bad eh, buy cream, then can make butter; buttermilk can use for pancakes, then butter can eat with pancakes. Have you considered keeping a cow in your garden ar? In addition to giving healthy sustenance, can help keep the grass trim. And then when it's dry, can make rendang.. ^_^

Maybe you should have just posted thamby's photo and then add a 2 liner. Might get you that 60 comments.

gfad, you hints are falling on deaf ears...
actually years ago, my son did ask me to buy a cow, so he can make his own cheese. ridiculous idea i thought it was at the time...but now, NOW THAT i have soo many applications for a cow, yeah, might be worthwhile considering. i've given up with the popularity race....60 comments are but a dream.

brother B, i am not sure where you can get CAKES made with buttermilk, but yeah, you're right, my red velvet recipe calls for buttermilk, which i use the lemon milk substitute. as for cakes with margarine, shudder...yeah, recently i handled some margarine, it was sooo slimy and sticky, i couldnt wash it off. ugh....

nipples, when your migration is complete, you'll be surrounded with lots of pancakes and porky bacon breakfasts....lucky you..but you wont have us to share it with la... so unlucky you.

J, i seriously doubt you could tell the diff...

I don't like butter and I don't like milk but buttermilk is too cute a word for me to dislike. And that stack of carbs is too magnificent for words right now... you ARE opening a breakfast place aren't you?! Otherwise I will have to pimp or prostitute damn hard to get an invite to one of these shindigs next!
